Biography

Graduated in philosophy in 1976 at the University of Milan, from 1980 to 1987 he was National Secretary, and subsequently National President of Legambiente. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies for two legislatures, on the PCI list in the elections of June 14, 1987, then reconfirmed with the PDS until 1994; he was a member of the Environment and Territory Commission. From 1994 to 1996 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Acea, the Municipal Energy and Environment Agency of the Municipality of Rome. From 1996 to 2002 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Enel and a Member of the Board of Directors of Wind
During his presidency, Enel was partially privatized with an IPO worth € 15 billion and Wind, the third Italian mobile operator, was founded. From July 2012 to March 2017 he was President of Assoelettrica
He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Riello Group (Italian leader in heating systems) from 2002 to 2004. From 2002 to 2005 he was a Member of the European Advisory Board of The Carlyle Group (Private Equity), Chairman of the Board of STA SpA (Rome City Council Mobility Agency) and President of the Kyoto Club. From 2005 to 2008 he was Chairman of Roma Metropolitane, a company of the Municipality of Rome that realizes the new Metropolitan Capital Lines. From 2004 to 2012 he was Managing Director of Rothschild. Until 2017 he was Chairman and CEO of Telit Communications.  
He was also a member of the Expert Advisory Committee of the European Carbon Fund, President of the Organizing Committee of the 20th World Energy Congress, promoted by the WEC-World Energy Council. Rome from 11 to 15 November 2007 and President of the Italian Nuclear Forum
He is currently President of Sorgenia; Chairman of E.VA, Energie Valsabbia, a company that develops and builds hydroelectric and solar plants; Vice President of Idea Capital Funds; Director Board of Telit Communications Plc
On 20 July 2018 he was elected President of Fise AssoAmbiente
He is a journalist and collaborates with some of the most important Italian newspapers and magazines. 
He was a lecturer in the School of Management at LUISS, a Free International University of Social Studies, a Masters in Business Administration, and was responsible for the course in Economics and Management of Public Service Companies. 
He is the author of the book "Going back to nuclear power: Italy, energy, the environment" (Gli Struzzi, Einaudi) released in April 2008, in which he traces twenty years of Italian public debate on environmental and energy policies and does not exclude nuclear. In June 2010 the new updated version of the book was published, with the collaboration of Patrizia Feletig (I Saggi - Baldini Castoldi Dalai Editore). He created a blog, www.newclear.it, with the aim of contributing to the debate on nuclear power in progress in the world and in Italy. With Patrizia Feletig he wrote "Against nature, because nature is not good, neither right nor beautiful", published by I Grilli, Marsilio and released in November 2014. And always with Marsilio he wrote "Too much easy to say no" together with Sergio Staino, published in March 2017: a tasty comparison with pencil strokes and words with which the authors bring to the saloon all the limits of the widespread culture of the No to show how these do not help at all to grow the country.
